Nineteen Years and Still ... I got scammed!
By Jerry Ward

I would like to address something that is still really bothering  me. I have been training and dieting, as well as using nutritional supplements, since I was 16 years old. Yup, I started this journey in 1992. In that time, I have seen fads come and go, tried everything I thought would get me to my goal faster, and studied everything I could get my hands on.

That being said, I have quite a lot of knowledge about the fitness and health industry. Well, even with all my knowledge, I still succumbed to one of the oldest tricks out there: advertising!

For Christmas last year, I went to my girlfriend's parent's house in Minnesota. While there, I went to a local nutrition store to get a can of protein for the week. No big deal right? I wanted a Whey protein, so I bought a 2.5 lb can and took it home. When I tried to mix it, it didn't blend well, and didn't taste right. I noticed the texture of the powder itself looked kind of odd.

I used it for the trip, left it there, and used it again this year when we went back. Same taste, same texture. I still didn't think much of it ... until I REALLY took the time to read the label!

PROTEIN ISOLATE on the label, which I assumed was WHEY. Well, as I read the shiny label (which is very hard to read), I realized it said WHEAT ISOLATE!

Here you can see how the label can be misleading if you are in a hurry. Notice the SMALL metallic silver band of with white letters under the PROTEIN ISOLATE. It says WHEAT which looks a lot like WHEY!

What? Wheat? I've never heard of WHEAT being used by athletes as a source of protein! Not in 20 years! And why put the words ISOLATE in big letters (which implies WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE), and put WHEAT in small shiny silver letters underneath?

It's because WHEAT is much cheaper to produce as a protein, and by creating a label like this, people like me will mistakenly buy it, thus creating a profit for the company. Many supplement companies rely on the first time buy as the profit simply because when a product doesn't work, people won't buy it again.

Many times young teens and people very new to working out will see some amazing ad in a magazine, go buy the product once, maybe twice, just to make sure it doesn't work, and then move on. Then someone else comes along and does the same thing. It's just one of the tricks they use to make some extra profit.

There are a lot of different ways supplement companies can put a spin on things to make it seem like their product is the be-all, end-all to get you to your new body. Some flat out lie, some twist studies around and report only selective results, and some have genuine products that work. It's very difficult to tell the good companies from the bad!

So next time you want to try a supplement, email me, do some research, and look at the label very carefully to make sure it's what you are looking for.
